Triple S: Real Techniques Travel Essentials Brush Kit Makeup Challenge

It's finally here! The makeup challenge that I've been talking about. I created this myself. I really hope you enjoy watching as much as I enjoyed making it.

Imagine only owning three brushes. What kind of makeup looks would you come up with? Think it's hardly a challenge? Then prove to us that it's easy as pie.

Here are the rules for the Real Techniques Travel Essentials Brush Kit Makeup Challenge Tag:
- The only brushes you can use are the ones from the Travel Essentials Kit
- You may not use sponge tips or cotton (Q) tips as brushes
- You are required to do a full face makeup.
- You must use at least three eyeshadow colours.

This technically is not a makeup tutorial. You can treat it as one but this is my first time doing a makeup video, so I was not facing the camera the whole time and my hand was blocking my face some of the time. This is NOT sponsored video.

I apologise for the background noise because I do not have professional equipment for filming. I did not do anything to my brows because they become too strong and thick whenever I fill them in. I have yet to reshape them. Also, I ended up putting on too much blush and looking like a clown anyway. Oops!

What do you think of this challenge? Will you give it a try? Do tell!

Wicked Wednesday: The Brush Guard review

I ordered a set of Brush Guards a month or so back. I'm sure many of you are familiar with this product thanks to Michelle Phan. If not, you can watch this video but don't worry, I'll explain it a little along the way. Since these are not sold locally (not that I am aware of), I had to order them directly from thebrushguard.com.

The Brush Guard are these little flexible cages that you slip over the bristles of your brush. This helps keep your brush in shape and minimises the amount of dirt exposure. This is very handy in terms of storage and travelling. You can easily throw them into your drawer or makeup bag without having to worry about the condition of your brushes. The Brush Guard comes in different sizes so that you can protect all of your different brushes.

Here are some of my brushes of various sizes.

I tried to do what Michelle Phan showed in her video, drying my freshly washed brushes by slipping them into a brush guard each and stand them inverted in a cup. It didn't work for me. The brushes remained damp after some hours and I did not find any water at the bottom of the cup. I still think is a good and useful product. Plus it was very affordable at USD$5.50.

Do you use The Brush Guard? How do you find it?

Wicked Wednesday: Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser Demo & Technique

If you can recall my review on LM Tinted Moisturiser, I did say that I would do a demo post and that I'd also teach you how to stretch your money and product further. So below is a photo of my (a part of) my cheek without anything on.

I use LM Tinted Moisturiser in Sand. So here's what the product looks like prior to blending. It has a foundation-like consistency. It's not thick like most moisturisers.

This is after blending it out with my fingers. As you can see, the product pretty much disappears. It's a perfect match for my skintone. You might say that it looks like it doesn't give any coverage what so ever. Well, that's because I've applied very little and a lot of the product probably ended up seeping into my fingers as well. I know it works because I've coverage some light pimple scars with it before.

So how do I maximise my usage of this expensive little product? I usually squeeze out some on the back of my hand. Then using my fourth/ring finger, I dab and dot the tinted moisturiser all over my face. I load my foundation brush up with a bit of regular moisturiser (so that it doesn't take up the tinted moisturiser) before blending the product out. If I feel like my foundation brush isn't doing a good enough job of blending it out, I use a Sigma Angled Kabuki brush to buff it into my skin, after having loaded it with regular moisturiser of course.

What foundation technique do you use? Please do share!

Hygiene & Makeup Go Hand in Hand

So I said I'd do a post on hygiene and makeup. As promised, here it is!

Source: makeupandbeauty.com

Hands
After having learnt about bacteria and hygiene in my previous post, this one is a given. Sanitise your hands or wash and dry them before you start applying any form of makeup. When applying product with a finger, opt for the fourth finger (the ring finger). It's been scientifically proven to be the cleanest finger because it is the least used finger.

Brushes
Wash your makeup brushes frequently (at least once a week) because bacteria can grow on the product left on the bristles. If you're going to use your brushes on someone else, best to wash it a day beforehand and let it air dry. After air drying your brushes, avoid leaving them out or you will have dust and bacteria landing on them (undoing the cleanliness). I normally remove dust from my brushes my dusting them off on the back of my hand and then quickly store them away in a drawer.

False Eyelashes
I find that these fine little hairs can trap dust and bacteria so don't leave them out. Keep them covered in the case that it came in. You'll be placing it so close to your eyes that dust and bacteria can transfer to your eyes easily.

Makeup
Don't share eye or lip makeup, especially mascaras. You may think that you or your friend are clean people but you will still have a certain amount of bacteria on you. The types of bacteria that you and your friend have are more than likely to be different. The last thing you want is to come across a "new bacteria" and be infected by it. If you want to know how to sanitise your makeup so that it can be used on others, watch this informative Youtube video by gossmakeupartist.

Summary
  • Sanitise/wash and dry your hands before you start your makeup.
  • Your fourth finger (ring finger) is the cleanest.
  • Don't leave anything exposed to the air for long periods, dust and bacteria will land on them.
  • Don't share eye or lip makeup. If you wish to, you must sanitise it first.
Do you have any other tips to add? I'd love to learn more.

Wicked Wednesday: Whoops! Too Much Liner?

I finally bought myself an angled eyeliner brush (ecoTools) and a lash/brow brush (manicare). I've only ever used a slightly rounded eyeliner brush by Bobbi Brown and I have to say that it's hard to do the cat eye with it.  Don't get me wrong, it's a good quality brush and I love it. So I tested out ecoTools' angled eyeliner brush, by wearing a cat eye look to work.

My colleague said she liked what I did with my eye makeup but I'm not so sure about my customers. They were probably cringing inside at the sight of me. I think I over did it. It didn't help that I was wearing a strong eye colour: Smog from Urban Decay's Naked Palette.

It's uneven, I know. I still need more practice! But I did have fun trying to achieve this look. I probably should have saved it for a night out instead of wearing it for work! Oh well, I just hope that my good customer service made up for it.

I have to say that I'm quite impressed with ecoTools. Not only is the brush affordable, it's of good quality too. It's feels soft to the touch but it's stiff enough to create some nifty eyeliner looks. The manicare's lash brush is alright. It separates my "mascara-ed" lashes but not as much as I want it to. I guess I still haven't quite gotten the hang of it.

I hope you enjoyed this post! Do you wear the cat eye to work? Do you think it's appropriate for work? Comment below and share your thoughts!

Wicked Wednesday: Sigma Brushes

It's been a while since I posted about a haul. Well, that's because it's been a while since I had a realy haul! So I ordered some makeup brushes from Sigma at the end of March and it arrived a week ago. I know what you're thinking and I can hear a loud gasp or tsk from you already. I bought something online! Well, if you must know, I did this prior to my buy-from-local-stores-vow.

I purchased an Angled top Kabuki brush (F84), an Eye Shading brush (E55) and a Small Tapered Blending brush (E45). I shared the shipping cost with a friend who bought a stippling brush. I also used the March discount code for 10% off. Anyway, the purchase came with a gift: a small blending brush (E25). I have yet to try them out yet but running my fingers through the bristles, I'm only truly impressed with the Kabuki brush. The others are a bit disappointing for me. So far, I've washed them, as recommended by Sigma and the tapered blending brush has been shedding a fair bit (before and after the wash). From one look, you don't think it's a good quality brush at all. The shading brush has been shedding a bit as well. It has hairs sticking out here and there. Not only does it look ugly and of lower quality, those hairs are bound to come off: more shedding. The small blending brush has completely lost its shape after the wash, with a lot of hairs sticking out.

These are of lower quality to me because I've been using Bobbi Brown, Benefit and Urban Decay brushes and they are of high quality. They've either shedded only one hair or never sheded before. They always go back to their original shape after every wash (yes, I do know how to wash brushes, in case you think I don't). I bought the Kabuki brush based on Jen's (frmheadtotoe.com) recommendation. There hasn't been any shedding and it looks and feels like a good quality brush. It maintained its shape after the wash.

Since this is just my first impression, I will update my review on these brushes somewhere down the line. I guess you get what you pay for. You buy cheap, you get cheap. I probably won't be buying any more items from Sigma. I rather take my money to MAC, Bobbi Brown, Benefit and Urban Decay. You could say that I'm fussy and you're right. Others might be really happy with Sigma brushes but that's them. Unfortunately, I have high standards when it comes to things that I buy.

Summary:
  • Happy with F84, Kabuki brush.
  • Not impressed with E55, E45, E25.
  • You get what you pay for.

Birthday Online Haul

I went on a frenzy shopping online for my birthday last year. The items finally arrived two weeks ago but I didn't get around to taking photos and posting them up until now. I won't go through all of them because you can already see them in the photo. The box between the false lashes and brushes is a lip liner from Benefit. The big black box contains a Good Karma crease brush from Urban Decay. All Benefit items were bought from their website and all Urban Decay items were purchased from BeautyBay.com

I was really excited about the UD lipstick. I loved how pretty and purple it looked, especially in it's box! I bought the colour "Naked" because, apparently, it's one of the best nude colours around.

Now it saddens me to report this but uncapping the lipstick the first time was agony! I spent half an hour trying to open it. The little dagger thing doesn't give you a lot of room or grip. It was capped on so tight that my fingers turned red from pulling at the dagger. I even tried running some warm water over the cap to get it to expand. I had to Google it to see if anyone could shed some light on how I can pry the thing open! I was really really frustrated. I twisted and pulled at the thing for a long time. Finally, after LOTS and LOTS of twisting and turning, I pulled and it gave. I managed to open it! Hoorah! But wait, as though I wasn't already put off by the whole experience, the lipstick itself was very short, compared to MAC and Rimmel. They did not give me a lot of product!

It was such an anticlimatic and exhuasting experience that I put the lipstick away afterwards, without swatching it or trying it on. I've been really busy so I still haven't had the time to try any of the products that I bought. I'm not joking. That's why there are no reviews for this post. I'll definitely be reviewing this lipstick (in terms of its quality) when I have the time.
